Softball sweeps Southern Virginia in CAC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Salisbury University softball team earned a pair of Capital Athletic Conference wins on Friday afternoon at Southern Virginia University.

Game 1: Salisbury 6, Southern Virginia 0

The Sea Gulls got a complete-game victory from junior Shannon Powell in the opener, where she scattered five hits in picking up her seventh win of the year. The Knights put just four runners into scoring position against Powell, with only two getting to third base. The hosts nearly scored in the sixth, with a runner on third and one out, but Powell got a groundball which turned into a double play thanks to second baseman Annie Pietanza, shortstop Dakotah Fraley, and first baseman Kristen Yanarella.

Pietanza led the offensive effort for Salisbury as one of four Sea Gulls with two hits while driving in three runs in the game. Her double in the fifth inning brought in one run and her two-run home run in the seventh capped the game's scoring.

It was one of two home runs in the first game for Salisbury with sophomore catcher Emily Allen blasting her fifth home run of the year in the sixth.

Allen, Sami Mumford, and LeAnne Collins each had two hits in the game with Collins and Fraley each scoring twice.

Game 2: Salisbury 11, Southern Virginia 2 (5 inn.)

The Sea Gulls (18-10, 5-3 CAC) fell behind in the early innings with Southern Virginia (13-8, 2-6 CAC) scoring an unearned run in the second inning, but the Sea Gulls exploded for all 11 of their runs in the third and fourth innings.

After a pair of walks and a bunt in the third, Pietanza singled home a run for the only hit in the three-run inning.

Allen homered for the second time in the day to open the eight-run fourth inning, in which Salisbury sent 13 batters to the plate. Pietanza drove in two runs with a double, while Allen came to the plate a second time and picked up two more RBI with a single through the right side.

Pietanza was 2-for-3 in the second game, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Cat Ramagnano and Collins each scored twice in the game.

Rachael Milligan earned Salisbury's second complete-game victory of the day, striking out seven over her five innings, giving up just four hits.

Salisbury continues its road trip on Saturday, April 14 at Frostburg State University. That CAC doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
