Men's tennis picks up 8-1 win over Washington College in regular season finale

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team closed out the 2018 regular season with a hard-fought battle against Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College on Wednesday afternoon, claiming an 8-1 win.

In singles play – contested first due to weather concerns – the Sea Gulls (16-5) were able to secure the team match with five wins.

The first two points went quickly in Salisbury's favor with Ian Siew picking up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Matthew Ryan closing out a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 moments later.

The Shoremen (7-8) got their only point by way of a 6-1, 6-3 win by August Meriot at No. 4 over Patrick MacLean, but the next two went to the Sea Gulls. Kelson Weber got an early break in the first set of his No. 4 match and rode that to a 6-4 win in his first set, and took the second by the same score.

Colt Williamson secured the fourth Salisbury point with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1.

The final singles match on court was the only one to need a third set. Stefan Hein rolled through his first set against Koby Bonta at No. 3 by a 6-1 score, but Bonta took a 4-1 lead in the second. Hein stormed back to take a 5-4 lead, but Bonta broke Hein's serve and claimed the second set, 7-5. In the third, Hein held a 3-2 lead before getting two late service breaks to win the final set 6-2 and seal the team victory.

In doubles play, Salisbury quickly added a sixth point with MacLean and Ryan rolling to an 8-0 win at No. 2. The Sea Gulls sealed the 8-1 win with an 8-3 win at No. 3 by Weber and Hein before Siew and Williamson ended their 8-5 win at No. 1.

The Sea Gulls get into Capital Athletic Conference tournament play on Tuesday, May 1 as the No. 3 seed in the event, traveling to No. 2-seeded Christopher Newport University.
