Sea Gulls drop 5-2 CAC semifinal at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team fell in its Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinal match on Wednesday at No. 34 Christopher Newport University, 5-2.

The second-seeded Captains (14-8) swept the three doubles points, with Salisbury coming up just shy at the No. 1 spot, where Ian Siew and Colt Williamson dropped an 8-6 contest.

Stefan Hein and Kelson Weber dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 3 and Patrick MacLean and Matthew Ryan fell at No. 2 by an 8-2 score.

Salisbury (16-6) began to battle back in singles play with Hein winning his sixth-straight match to close out the year at No. 3, winning 6-1 6-2 to cut the deficit to 3-1. David Reed defeated Williamson at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2 to put the Captains one point away from the win.

Weber got Salisbury's second point, finishing off a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 before Christopher Newport's Nicholas Ruzicka claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win against MacLean to seal the team victory.

Two matches were not able to finish, with Siew trailing in his No. 2 match 6-4, 1-0 and Ryan was leading in his second set at No. 6 after falling in the first set 6-1, 3-5.
