Pepper's career day pushes No. 3 Women's Lacrosse past W&J, 17-3

LEXINGTON, Va. - A career day for freshman Camryn Pepper pushed the third-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team to the quarterfinals of the 2021 NCAA Division III National Tournament with a 17-3 victory over the Washington & Jefferson Presidents in Saturday's NCAA Third Round matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salisbury scored 11 goals and held Washington & Jefferson scoreless in the first half of play. 

  • In the game's first 45 seconds, Lauren Valenti netted her first goal of the day off an assist by Alexis Strobel to give Salisbury the early 1-0 lead. 

  • In the next three Sea Gull goals, Camryn Pepper contributed a point in each, off of two goals and dished an assist to Lydia McNulty to extend the lead, 4-0, in the first five minutes of the game. 

  • Delaney Hill, Anna Robinson, Strobel and McNulty tallied the next four Sea Gull goals, with Strobel and Robinson contributing in twice on one goal and one assist each to extend the lead 8-0 with 16:37 remaining in the half. 

  • McNulty completed her hat trick while Julie Talbert and Valenti scored to close out the half's scoring and push the score to 11-0 at the half.

  • Coming out of the halftime break, Salisbury went on a three-goal run which was led by Mary Hanzsche who tallied one goal and dished out one assist and strikes from Leah Vilov and Ella Mannix to push the Sea Gull lead to 14-0.

  • W&J went on a three-goal run with back-to-back goals from Amanda Effland and a tally from Lina Crowley. Sophia Jenkins added two assists in the three-goal run to help make the score 14-3 with 17:32 remaining in the game.

  • In the game's final three goals, Pepper tallied three points on two assists to Becca Puente and Meridith Price and an unassisted goal to secure the 17-3 win over Washington & Jefferson.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Camryn Pepper led the Salisbury offense with a career-high six points on three goals and three assists.

  • Anna Robinson added five points on the day from one goal and four assists. 

  • Lydia McNulty netted her eighth hat trick of the season.

  • Meridith Price collected a career four draw controls and picked up two ground balls. 

  • Caroline McKenna paced the Salisbury defense with two caused turnovers and collected one ground ball.

  • Mary Claire Hisle (3) and Kaitlyn Hunsinger (1) combined for four saves in net for the Sea Gulls. 

  • Salisbury had the edge with 22-12 in ground balls, 16-6 in draw controls and 11-3 in caused turnovers over Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON GAME NOTES 

  • Anna Effland netted a pair of goals against the Sea Gulls.

  • Sophia Jenkins dished out two assists, picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers for Washington & Jefferson.

  • Lina Crowley struck once for the Presidents.

  • Sarah Labovitz collected a team-high four draw controls while also scooping up two ground balls. 

  • Kaitlyn Brown recorded 13 saves for the Presidents 

UP NEXT 

  • Salisbury advanced to Sunday's NCAA Division III Regional Finals and will play the winner of the Ithaca vs. Washington & Lee matchup. 

  • The national quarterfinal game is set to begin at 6 p.m. at Washington & Lee.
