Three records fall for Track & Field at CNU Holiday Open

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams opened the indoor season in style, breaking three school records at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open on Saturday at the Freeman Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

MEN
  • Rashawn Markman highlighted the men's efforts on the day, snagging silver while breaking a program record in the triple jump with a distance of 14.63 meters. As of Dec. 3, Markman's finish in the triple leads all of Division III and ranks 20th in the nation across all divisions. 
  • Markman also took home gold in the long jump, soaring 7.01 meters for a new personal best. The leap landed Markman fifth in Division III.
  • Andrew McGinley earned a bronze medal in the high jump, leaping 1.95 meters for his best career finish in the event indoors. Dylan Haun took fifth place with a jump of 1.85 meters.
  • Jon Alicea and Liam Kessell followed Markman in the triple jump, with Alicea's leap of 13.19 meters landing him in fourth place with a personal record while Kessel's jump of 12.31 meters was good for sixth.
  • Jacob Shelton and Aaron Dufresne combined for the top two spots in the 60-meter dash, with Shelton finishing in 7.04 seconds and Dufresne clocking a 7.24 second time. Mason Cassady logged a time of 7.30 seconds to take fourth and Ryan Kramer's 7.42 seconds was good for fifth in the event.
  • Mike Heinz and Kai Smith joined one another atop the podium following the 400-meter dash. Heinz posted a time of 51.74 seconds, while Smith finished in 51.81 seconds. Ryan Temple took sixth in the race at 52.97 seconds.
  • Graham Schultz earned the top spot in the 800-meter, taking gold and a new personal record with a time of 2:03.92.
  • Bryce Tucci took fourth place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.55 seconds.
  • Salisbury landed three in the top six in the men's 3,000 meters, with Tristan Dutton's new personal best time of 9:22.68 leading the group with a silver medal. Declan Burke earned fourth after posting a 9:26.15, while Brett Parker logged a time of 9:47.83 good for sixth in the race.
  • Austen Cave took fourth in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 15:25.10 for a new personal record.
  • Ryan Cascone logged a 4:44.13 in the 1-mile run, good for fifth place in the event.
  • The Sea Gulls snagged a silver in the Men's 4x400 relay, with Hayden Myers, Dean Bullock, Graham Schultz, and Mike Heinz joining forces for a 3:35.64 in the race.
  • Mason Breeze and JJ McCauley finished fourth and fifth in the men's shot put, with the former recording a distance of 13.24 meters while the latter tossed 13.06 meters.
  • Jacob Reeves earned a bronze medal in the weight throw with a distance of 14.33 meters, a new personal high mark.
WOMEN
  • Two school records fell on the women's side on Saturday. Anna Bodmer's time of 18:23.93 in the 5,000 meters surpassed the prior Salisbury record, while Marlyse Haack soared for a 5.43-meter distance in the long jump to etch her name in the record book.
  • Haack also nabbed silver in the triple jump, flying 10.73 meters to earn second place. Emma Christman landed fifth in the event, jumping 10.06 meters.
  • Mia Hill earned gold and a new personal best in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.46. Hill also placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.07 meters.
  • Madison Lamb joined Hill, finishing fourth in the 400-meter race with a time of 1:05.13.
  • Kennedy Atkins stood atop the podium in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking 10.09 seconds to nab gold in the event. Teammate Alyssa Wohlfarth joined Atkins on the podium, taking bronze with a time of 10.98 seconds.
  • Atkins also posted a distance of 4.98 meters in the long jump, earning fifth in the event.
  • Karia Forvil set a new personal record in the 60-meter dash, logging a time of 8.11 in the preliminaries before an official result of 8.13 seconds to earn bronze in the race.
  • Peri Nelson took third in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:48.64. Kristen Riddell finished fifth in the event at 6:09.43, while Erin Connelly finished sixth at 6:09.50.
  • Haack also finished third in the 200-meter with a time of 27.75 seconds. Forvil claimed fourth in the event at 27.78 seconds, while Hill finished sixth at 28.31 seconds.
  • Maggie Dwire took fifth in the 800-meter with a time of 2:39.12.
  • SU's 4x400-meter relay team of Dwire, Connelly, Nelson, and Lamb finished fourth in the event, clocking in at 4:34.40.
  • Kailey Jarboe took sixth place in the women's shot put, recording a distance of 9.27 meters.

  • The Sea Gulls return after the holidays, traveling to George Mason University for the Patriot Games on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Fairfax, Va.
