NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University track and field teams opened their title chase with a bang at Day 1 of the 2024 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon at the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University.

The Sea Gull women closed the first day of competition with 50 points, good for second place behind hosts CNU (97) and well ahead of third-place UC Santa Cruz (29). The Sea Gull men slotted in third with 23 points, trailing CNU (48) and UC Santa Cruz (34).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Women
- Marlyse Haack turned in a historic performance to win the gold medal in the long jump. Haack clocked in at 5.44 meters (17-10.25), breaking the C2C championship meet record, as well as her own school record set earlier in the winter.
- Mia Hill finished second behind Haack in the long jump at 5.32 meters (17-5.5).
- Anna Bodmer once again outdid herself in the 5,000-meter run, breaking the SU top mark for the third time this season by clocking in at 17:55.14. Bodmer eclipsed the previous C2C championship record on the way to earning the silver medal.
- Rachel Roberts (18:35.96) and Madi Sisson (18:56.13) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, behind Bodmer in the 5,000 meters.
- Madison Lamb grabbed a silver in the high jump by scaling 1.51 meters (4-11.5). Samantha Minner (1.36m, 4-5.5) also earned a point by finishing sixth.
- The distance medley relay team of Leah Snyder, Lamb, Peri Nelson, and Alyssa Santoro crossed in third at 13:18.63.
- Kailey Jarboe set a personal record by taking fourth in the weight throw at 11.47 meters (37-7.75).
- Three Sea Gulls qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles as Kennedy Atkins (10.03) finished third in the prelims, followed by Taleah Williams (10.21) in sixth and Alyssa Wohlfarth (10.64) in seventh.
Men
- Rashawn Markman won the indoor long jump gold medal for the second time in his career, matching his personal best at 7.01 meters (23-0). Markman has now won four C2C championships in his career, including three indoor crowns.
- Mason Breeze led a trio of Sea Gulls to earn points in the weight throw, finishing third at 15.59 meters (51-1.75). Logan Kelsch (15.03m, 49-3.75) and Jacob Reeves (15.01m, 49-3) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
- Jacob Shelton (7.11) finished sixth in the 60-meter dash prelims, while Aaron Dufresne (7.19) came in right behind in seventh. Both qualified for Saturday's finals.
