Two more records fall as Track & Field competes at Richard Drake Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Two more school records fell as the Salisbury University track and field teams competed in the Richard Drake Invitational, their final competition before the indoor conference championship, on Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Men
  • Kai Smith overtook the school record in the 200-meter dash, breaking the tape in 21.88 seconds to overtake SU Hall-of-Famer Delannie Spriggs' 2010 mark (22.00 seconds). Smith also crossed third in the 400-meter run in 49.61 seconds.
  • Sam Bodmer led a quartet of Sea Gulls who finished top-six in the 3,000-meter run, crossing in second place in 9:07.87. Tristan Dutton finished right behind in third in a personal-best 9:10.17, followed by Landon Lewicki (9:13.17) in fourth and Garrett Saboy (9:19.48) in sixth.
  • The 4x400-meter relay team of Smith, Hayden Myers, Ryan Temple, and Mike Heinz earned a bronze in 3:22.57, their best time of the indoor season.
  • Andrew McGinley cleared 1.92 meters (6-3.5) in the high jump to finish fourth.
  • Logan Kelsch (14.91m, 48-11) placed fourth in the weight throw, while Mason Breeze (14.19m, 46-6.75) clocked in sixth, both with personal records.
  • Graham Schultz snagged fifth place in the 800-meter run in a personal-best 2:01.66.
  • Peyton Dill finished fifth in the pole vault at 3.62 meters (11-10.5).
  • Declan Burke took sixth in the mile run in 4:34.89.
  • Heinz crossed sixth in the 400-meter run in 50.72 seconds.
  • Bryce Tucci qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash, finishing seventh in 9.51 seconds.
Women
  • Anna Bodmer continued her torrid winter by smashing the school record in the 3,000-meter run, clinching gold in the event in 10:19.03. Bodmer has set a new school record on three occasions during the indoor season, breaking the 5,000-meter run mark twice over on Dec. 2 and Jan. 27.
  • Marlyse Haack and Mia Hill gave the Sea Gulls a one-two punch at the top of the long jump table. Haack won the event at 5.20 meters (17-0.75), while Hill clocked in at 5.09 meters (16-8.5) to take second.
  • The 4x400-meter relay team of Hill, Madison Lamb, Karia Forvil, and Peri Nelson crossed in second place with a time of 4:23.87.
  • Lamb scaled 1.52 meters (4-11.75) in the high jump, a personal record, to take second place.
  • Rachel Roberts finished third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:48.01, while Madi Sisson took fifth in the event in 10:54.56, each establishing new personal records.
  • Forvil qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash, finishing fourth in the event in 8.13 seconds.
  • Kennedy Atkins (personal-best 10.06 seconds) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles. Alyssa Wohlfarth also qualified for the finals and finished eighth in 10.80 seconds.
  • Nelson took fourth in the 800-meter run in a personal-best 2:27.07.
  • Emma Christman (10.34m, 33-11.25) snagged fifth place in the triple jump.
  • Leah Snyder (personal-best 5:49.50) earned a sixth-place finish in the mile run.
UP NEXT
  • After a week off, the Sea Gulls will head to Christopher Newport University for the 2024 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Championships on Feb. 16-17.
  • Friday competition from the Freeman Center is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., while Saturday events are slated for 10 a.m.
