NEW ORLEANS – Six members of the Salisbury University men's and women's track and field teams across seven events have been
named NCAA Division III Indoor Mid-Atlantic All-Region honorees for the 2023-24 season, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Anna Bodmer (5,000 meters),
Rashawn Markman (long jump, triple jump), and
Kai Smith (60 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters) were singled out for their individual prowess, while Smith joined
Hayden Myers,
Ryan Temple, and
Mike Heinz on the Sea Gulls' top-performing 4x400-meter relay team.
Â
Bodmer, a freshman from Dickerson, Md., ran an SU-record 17:55.14 in the 5,000 meters at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Indoor Championships last month, surpassing the old conference championship meet record and winning the silver medal. It was the third time this season Bodmer set a new school record in the event, joining the two times she broke the school 3,000-meter record.
Â
Markman, a junior from Waldwick, N.J., won a pair of C2C gold medals in the long and triple jumps. His 7.01 meters (23-0) in the long jump matched a personal best from earlier in the season, and his 14.70 meters (48-2.75) in the triple jump broke the SU record and earned him qualification for nationals in the event. Markman is now an eight-time All-Region honoree across the indoor and outdoor long and triple jumps.
Â
Smith, a sophomore from Upper Marlboro, Md., set a personal record in the 60-meter dash of 6.98 seconds at the George Mason Patriot Games on Jan. 27. His season bests in the 200 meters (21.88 seconds) and 400 meters (49.61 seconds) came at the Richard Drake Invitational on Feb. 4. Smith adds his four All-Region nods to a collection of six from the 2022-23 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Â
Smith, Myers (So. – Shady Side, Md.), Temple (Sr. – Silver Spring, Md.), and Heinz (Sr. – Cream Ridge, N.J.) teamed up for their second straight All-Region laurels in the 4x400-meter relay. The quartet's season-best mark of 3:22.57 came at the Richard Drake Invitational on Feb. 4. Two weeks later,
Thomas Niblock teamed up with Temple, Myers, and Heinz to repeat as C2C gold medalists in the event.
Â
Per the USTFCCCA, the top five individuals in each event from each region, as well as each member of the region's top three relay teams, qualified for All-Region accolades. The regions designated for the awards, including the Mid-Atlantic, mimic those from cross country season.
Â
Markman will cap his indoor season in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday. The Sea Gulls will continue their outdoor slate at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Mar. 14-16.
