Men finish second, Women third at C2C Outdoor Championships; Smith, Hasko sweep awards

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University track and field teams won eight more gold medals and each recorded top-three team finishes at the second and final day of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Outdoor Championships on Saturday at the SU Track & Field Complex.
 
The Sea Gull men placed second with 177 points, edging out third-place UC Santa Cruz (176) by one point and finishing a mere six points back of first-place Christopher Newport (183) in the final tally. Mary Washington (57) and Pratt (4) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
 
The Sea Gull women earned a solid third-place positioning with 154.5 points. CNU (209) and UC Santa Cruz (202.5) finished in the top two slots, with Mary Washington (25) taking fourth and Pratt (15) fifth.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
MEN
  • Kai Smith left several vapor trails behind him on the way to winning C2C Track Athlete of the Meet for the second straight year. Smith won four gold medals, including a pair of record-setting performances in the 200 and 400 meters. In just two seasons he now owns seven outdoor C2C championships and nine titles overall.
  • In the 200 meters, Smith broke the SU, conference championship, and overall conference records with a time of 20.89 seconds that currently ranks third in NCAA Division III. In the 400 meters, he smashed the school and championship meet marks in 47.82 seconds, currently slotting 25th nationally in the event.
  • The Sea Gulls struck gold in both relays on the day. Fresh off their Penn Relays title, Jacob Shelton, Hayden Myers, Aaron Dufresne, and Smith broke the tape in the 4x100 meters in a season-best 41.49 seconds.
  • In the 4x400 meters, Smith, Myers, Ryan Temple, and Mike Heinz repeated as conference champions in 3:19.04, shaving over three seconds off their 2023 title-winning time.
  • Cameron Hasko was dubbed C2C Field Athlete of the Meet one day after becoming a four-time conference champion in the javelin throw (57.30m, 188-0).
  • Competing in his first race since last year's outdoor championships, Gavin Shaffer successfully defended his gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles, breaking the tape in 15.49 seconds.
  • Connor Kinch dominated in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, winning gold in a personal-best 9:22.70 that was a full eight seconds faster than the rest of the field.
  • Kinch also earned a silver medal in the 5,000 meters with a personal record of 15:06.64.
  • Heinz earned points by finishing second in the 400 meters (49.29) and sixth in the 200 meters (PR 22.48).
  • Myers (PR 50.56) and Temple (50.60) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400 meters.
  • Andrew McGinley and Dylan Haun shared the silver in the high jump by each scaling 1.82 meters (5-11.5).
  • Dean Bullock set a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles (57.34) to take fourth.
  • Tristan Dutton grabbed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best 9:53.94.
  • Mason Breeze finished fourth in the shot put (PR 13.62m, 44-8.25), while JJ McCauley (13.59m, 44-7) took fifth.
  • Logan Kelsch (46.53m, 152-8) and Jacob Reeves (46.41m, 152-3) snagged fifth and sixth, respectively, in the hammer throw.
  • Bryce Tucci (17.12) finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.
WOMEN
  • Marlyse Haack earned her first outdoor gold medal in the triple jump, posting a season-best mark of 10.93 meters (35-10.5).
  • Anna Bodmer won the 5,000 meters, breaking the tape in 17:59.57 for her first C2C gold medal.
  • Haack joined Peri Nelson, Madison Lamb, and Karia Forvil to earn the silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay, crossing in a season-best time of 4:11.85.
  • Kennedy Atkins posted a second-place mark of 16.83 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.
  • Lamb earned a second silver in the high jump by clearing 1.54 meters (5-0.5), and Samantha Minner took fifth at 1.31 meters (4-3.5).
  • Alyssa Santoro finished close behind Bodmer in the 5,000 meters, posting a season-best mark of 19:08.29 to win the bronze medal. Madi Sisson (19:37.80) finished sixth.
  • Lamb crossed third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.77, with Annabella Jaconetti (PR 1:13.19) earning points in fourth place and Grace Dear (1:16.90) in sixth.
  • Forvil (12.92) took the bronze in the 100 meters, while Julie Thomas (13.42) finished fifth.
  • Rachel Roberts (12:03.58) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Leah Snyder (12:21.20) coming in fifth.
  • Kailey Jarboe posted two more top-four finishes in throwing events, placing third in the shot put (9.50m, 31-2) and fourth in the hammer throw (33.82m, 110-11).
  • Forvil (PR 26.33) and Haack (26.49) rolled fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 meters.
  • Nelson finished fourth in the 800 meters at 2:26.30.
  • Emma Christman slotted fourth in the triple jump at 10.42 meters (34-2.25).
  • Atkins (8.85m, 29-0.5) took sixth in the shot put.

  • Select Sea Gull athletes will look to improve their national standings at the SWAT Meet on Monday, May 13. First events from Swarthmore, Pa., are set for 4 p.m.
