Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team began its fall tournament season with two days of action at the six-team Christopher Newport Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Eyre Courts.
DAY ONE NOTES
- Asher Willenborg earned a pair of singles victories on the day, taking down Averett's Lucas Fiandra (6-3, 6-0) and Shenandoah's Artem Babaiev (6-3, 6-0).
- Maas Jacobs also went undefeated across his two matches, bouncing Cam Perry of Virginia Wesleyan (6-1, 6-2) and Sam Egui of Averett (6-0, 6-2).
- Christopher Catan gave the Sea Gulls a trio of undefeated singles players on the first day, dispatching Shenandoah's Max Arkans (6-4, 1-6, 10-6) and Washington College's Nick Styliades (6-0, 6-0).
- Gianluca Beaujon, Aron Bursztyn, Nicholas O'Dea, Mitchell Desman, and Gurv Suri each prevailed in one of their two matches.
- O'Dea and Catan teamed up for an 8-4 doubles win over WAC's Oskar Wroblewski and Aaradith Ravichandran.
- Jacobs and Cooper Wheeler also won their doubles tilt, taking down VWU's Natan Aerts and Olaf van der Stam 8-4.
DAY TWO NOTES
- Maas Jacobs swept the weekend in singles by taking down Averett's Alex Donnelly [7-6 (7-4), 6-3] in his only solo match of the day.
- Christopher Catan also completed an undefeated weekend on the singles side by besting VWU's Natan Aerts (6-3, 6-2).
- Jhayden Pappas earned his first singles victory of the weekend by taking down Lucas Fiandra of Averett (6-3, 6-2).
- Gurv Suri bested Averett's Prabjeet Chandhok (6-3, 4-6, 10-8) for his second win of the weekend.
- In the only Salisbury vs. Salisbury matchup in the tourney, Nicholas O'Dea took down Aron Bursztyn in a three-set thriller (5-7, 7-5, 10-5).
- Bursztyn and Mitchell Desman posted two doubles victories with triumphs over Shenandoah's Aryanth Chintharlapalli and Marvin Kuehnelt (8-4) and WAC's Oskar Wroblewski and Aaradith Ravichandran (8-0).
- Asher Willenborg and Gianluca Beaujon won a doubles matchup on the final day, as did the duos of O'Dea and Catan, and Jacobs and Cooper Wheeler.
The Sea Gulls will continue fall play at the ITA South/Southeast Regional Tournament next Friday through Sunday in Fredericksburg, Va. at the University of Mary Washington.
