Henneman one back of lead as Men’s Golf opens spring at Marlins Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Salisbury University men's golf team cut the ribbon on the spring portion of its schedule with a strong showing in the first round of the Marlins Invitational, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan on Monday at Cypress Point Country Club.
 
The Sea Gulls shot a 25-over 313 over the first 18 holes, right in the middle of the 11-team field in sixth place. SU finished the day just two strokes back of fifth-place Hardin-Simmons and a full eight strokes up on seventh-place Chowan.
 
ROUND NOTES
  • Ryan Henneman will enter Tuesday's final round one shot back of the lead in the field of 69 after shooting an even-par 72 and tying for second through the opening round. Henneman birdied twice on the day, first on eight and again on 14.
  • Peter Carnegie scored in the 70s, shooting a seven-over 79 to tie for 21st. Carnegie completed a birdie on seven.
  • Spring newcomer Alex Langford tied for 30th after his first round of collegiate golf, shooting an eight-over 80 with a birdie on six.
  • Mason Ellis shot a 10-over 82 with a birdie on four, good for a tie for 40th.
  • Dominic Cahill recorded SU's drop score for the round at a 13-over 85 (t-56th), while Parker Pruitt was forced to withdraw in the middle of the round.
  • Ben Bowen also competed as an individual, shooting a 23-over 95 to place 66th.
 
The Sea Gulls will finish off their spring debut with the second and final round of the Marlins Invitational on Tuesday. Shotgun tee times from Cypress Point begin at 9 a.m.
