SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
soccer team secured the fourth-seed in the upcoming Capital
Athletic Conference tournament with a 6-1 victory over Marymount
University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Sea Gulls (10-4-1, 5-3 CAC) entered today's game tied for
fourth place with the Saints (7-10, 4-4 CAC) with identical 4-3
conference marks.
The two teams traded the first two goals of the game before
Salisbury unloaded five straight goals to close out the regular
season with its 10th win of the season. Senior Wijy
Jones scored his eighth goal of the season in the 65th
minute to increase his streak to five consecutive games with a
goal.
SU sophomore Nick Malone scored the game's
first goal at the 24th minute and netted the Gulls' first goal of
the second half off a nice assist from Dave
Kroening in the 62nd minute. Salisbury led 2-1 at the
break as Jason Smith scored his third goal of the
season on an unassisted chance.
The second half was all Salisbury as the Sea Gulls outshot the
Saints 15-2 (27-7 for the game) and scored four goals in the final
26 minutes of the game. Freshman Alex Hargrove
scored first goal and assist of the season in the final six minutes
of the game.
SU junior goalie Matt Blue (four saves)
improved his season record to 4-1. Marymount goalies Nick Anderesh
(one save) and Ryan Manning (three saves) had a long day in between
the pipes for the Saints.
The two teams will face each other in the first round of the
2006 CAC tournament. Salisbury will host Marymount on Sunday; game
time will be announced later this week.
