SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
soccer team honored its nine seniors on Senior Day with a first
round Capital Athletic Conference win over Marymount University,
4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex.
The game was a defensive battle until the 42nd minute when SU
freshman Kyle Sterling scored on a Jason
Smith cross for what ended up being the game winning goal
for the Gulls.
Salisbury (11-4-1) started the second half scoring when senior
T.J. Nairn ripped a direct kick into the back of
the net. The free kick was a result of a Marymount (7-11) foul
which led to one of its two red card ejections.
Senior captain Wijy Jones netted a dynamic
header off of a beautiful cross into the box by sophomore Nick
Malone. With the goal Jones extended his consecutive goal game
streak to six games.
Sea Gull junior Andrew Henciak ended the
scoring with 15 seconds left in the game setup by an assist from
senior Michael Walker.
Salisbury once again split time between the posts with junior
goalie Matt Blue (one save) and senior
Scott McGuire (one save). The Sea Gull defense
shut out the Saints and surrendered only three shots. SU also took
more corner kicks than MU, 8-2.
Salisbury will now travel to York to take on the top-seeded
Spartans in a semifinal match at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 1. SU
will look to avenge a thrilling overtime loss to YCP in the
regular-season, 2-1. York is currently ranked third in the nation
and are defending CAC champions.
