SALISBURY, Md. - Junior Sara
Schmidt scored the only goal of the game in the 59th
minute to lift the Salisbury University women's soccer team past
Marymount 1-0 in the opening round of the Capital Athletic
Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex.
Salisbury (8-6-1) had opportunities to score in the first half,
with three shots on goal, but Marymount (6-10-1) goalie Beth Dickey
stood strong as she made three saves. The teams went into halftime
scoreless.
The Sea Gulls controlled the second half as they had 14 shots,
six of them on goal including the game-winner. Senior Kate
Weaver set-up the goal on a pass to Schmidt, who lofted
the ball over Dickey's head to put the Sea Gulls up 1-0.
Salisbury had more chances to score in the second half but
Dickey (eight saves) kept the Saints in the game. However, the MU
offense couldn't get much going as it totaled only six shots for
the game (four on goal).
Samantha Phipps held her own in net for
Salisbury as she made four saves to secure the win.
Salisbury had 11 corner kicks in the game, seven coming in the
second half, to Marymount's four. The Sea Gulls also outshot
the Saints, 18-6.
Salisbury will move on in the CAC Tournament and face
second-seeded Catholic University in the semifinal round. The Sea
Gulls will travel to Washington, D.C. at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October
31. Catholic edged Salisbury, 1-0, in double overtime back on
September 16.
