Strong second half sends SU to the CAC championship game

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Salisbury University women's soccer team avenged its early season loss to Catholic University with a 2-0 upset of the second-seed Cardinals in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals here Tuesday afternoon.

Salisbury (9-6-1), the No. 3 seed, will now host the CAC championship game as fourth-seed St. Mary's (Md.) College defeated top-seed York (Pa.) College in penalty kicks, 4-2. The two teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie which forced PKs.

The Sea Gulls netted two second half goals to advance to their first CAC championship appearance since 2004 where SU lost to the University of Mary Washington on penalty kicks.

Statistically Catholic (11-7-1) controlled the second half but it ran into a stingy Sea Gull defense anchored by goalie Samantha Phipps (nine saves). On the other side of the field SU got things going offensively as CUA's Helene Nicoletti got issued a yellow card that allowed junior midfielder Robyn Bishop a free kick from 20-yards out. Bishop put the ball in the upper left hand corner of the goal to put the Sea Gulls up 1-0 in the 70th minute.

The Gulls didn't stop there as sophomore Dana Passucci assisted freshman Ally Olewine, who kicked one by Cardinal goalie Kim Stengle (six saves) in the 81st minute to put Salisbury up for good.

The Sea Gulls, who were outshot in the first half 9-7 (17-12 for the game), had several good looks in the first 45 minutes of play, including two corner kicks that hit off the crossbar. However, just like the first meeting between the schools, the Cardinals and Sea Gulls went into intermission scoreless.

Salisbury will face St. Mary's (Md.) College on Saturday, November 4 at the SU Soccer Complex. The game time will be announced later this week. The two teams met back on October 14 when Salisbury won 2-1 on a last second goal by Kate Weaver.
