SALISBURY, Md. - It wasn't a pretty game but
the end result was what the Salisbury University men's soccer team
set out to accomplish on Tuesday afternoon, a win.
The Sea Gulls defeated Gallaudet University, 2-0, in a home
Capital Athletic Conference contest.
Salisbury (4-1-1, 2-1-0 CAC) entered the game less then 72 hours
from Saturday's tough 2-1 overtime loss to No. 5 York College.
The Sea Gulls went through the motions in the first half before
getting a break on the offensive side of the ball 31 minutes into
the game. The Bison (0-6-1, 0-2-0) committed a foul inside the
goalie box which set-up a Dico Doran penalty kick
that he converted as the Gulls went into halftime leading 1-0.
In the second half, sophomore Nick Malone
scored his third goal of the season with a shot from the right side
of the goal into the left corner of the net, past Gallaudet goalie
James Macgill (11 saves), at the 73rd minute.
Salisbury outshot Gallaudet, 28-2, and took 14 corners against
the physical Bison who accumulated 14 fouls and two yellow cards.
SU junior goalie Matt Blue (one save) earned his first win of
the season.
The Sea Gulls will next host No. 24 University of Rochester
(N.Y.) at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 23, at the SU Soccer Complex.
NOTES: Salisbury dropped out of the recent
National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas National
Division III rankings released on Tuesday. The Sea Gulls were
ranked No. 22. . .In the D3Kicks.com Top 25 poll, Salisbury fell
two spots to No. 24. . . Rochester is ranked No. 15 in that same
poll.
