WASHINGTON, D.C. - The No. 3
Salisbury University field hockey team ended its 2007 regular
season with its 15th straight victory. SU managed to get the
victory in adverse conditions Wednesday against Catholic University
of America 3-1 on the road in the rain.
Salisbury (16-1) was led by sophomore Lauren
Correll, who scored two second half goals. Correll leads
the team in goals (19) and points (40).
Senior Ashley Twigg started off the scoring for
SU as she deflected a Kandice Hancock pass into
the back of the cage to put the Gulls up 1-0 at the 18:30 mark in
the first half. SU led 1-0 at the break. Twigg also added an assist
on Correll's second goal later in the game.
Senior goalie Maria Ramoundos (two saves)
earned her 16th win as she is a perfect 16-0 on the season in the
goal for SU. Ramoundos has recorded 59 saves and only allowed 10
goals in over 1,000 minutes played this season.
Catholic (9-7) received its lone goal from Meredith Chandler in
the 43rd minute off an Erin Kelly assist to cut into the SU lead,
2-1. Correll capped the game with her second goal of the game in
the 58th minute. CUA goalie Marian Cassilly (11 saves) received the
loss.
Salisbury is the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic
Conference tournament. The Sea Gulls received a first round bye and
will host either University of Mary Washington or Villa Julie
College on Wednesday, October 31, at Sea Gull Stadium. The game
time for that game has not been determined. SU has won 12 straight
CAC championships.
Last season, the Cardinals were the top-seed in the CAC
tournament before they lost to the Sea Gulls in the championship
game. Catholic left the CAC after last year to join the newly
formed Landmark Conference.
