SALISBURY, Md.- The Salisbury University men's
soccer team squared off against Rt. 13 rival Wesley College on
Wednesday afternoon and came away with a 5-0 shutout at the SU
Soccer Complex in the first-ever meeting between the two schools as
Capital Athletic Conference members. This is Wesley's first year in
the CAC.
Salisbury (7-3-1, 3-0) wasted no time as current CAC Athlete of the
Week Kyle Sterling scored on a point blank shot in
the box in the 6th minute off an assist from senior Dave
Kroening. The assist is the first of the year for
Kroening. Sterling, a sophomore, added a second goal in the game on
an unassisted strike in the 63rd minute. The final goal of the game
for the Gulls was Sterling's seventh for the season, a team
best.
Junior Romaine Bruney sparked the Sea Gulls off
the bench as he hit a streaking Kevin Mongello who
scored in the 37th minute to end a 30 minute scoreless drought.
Bruney scored the next goal for SU on a bending right-footed blast
just before halftime where the Sea Gulls led 3-0. Freshman
Dave Corrigan recorded an assist on the Bruney
strike.
Sophomore goalie Greg Wellinghoff was once again
spectacular for the Gulls as he recorded his fifth win on the
season and added 61 minutes of scoreless play. Junior Matt
Blue and sophomore Josh Scotton both
contributed double-digit minutes in between the pipes to preserve
the team shutout. The shutout was the teams third straight and
eighth on the season.
Wesley (4-8, 3-2 CAC) dropped its second conference game after
starting the season with three straight CAC wins. Wolverine goalie
Nick Talarico gave up five goals however played great in the net
and recorded seven saves. Talarico tried to contain the Gulls the
best he could as he denied several would-be goals throughout the
game.
Sophomore Alex Hargrove added a score in the 52nd
minute to put the Gulls up 4-0 by way of a well placed chip from
freshman Joe Rubel.
SU dominated the stat sheet once again as they outshot Wesley 21-4
and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. The maroon and gold now
improve to 10-1-1 against Wesley all-time.
Salisbury will now shift its attention to University of Mary
Washington as it hosts the Eagles at home on Saturday, October 6.
First place in the CAC will be up for grabs as both teams enter
with perfect conference records. The game time is slated for 2:30
p.m.
