SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
soccer team advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference
championship game with a semifinal win Tuesday over Wesley College,
4-0, in front of 125 at the SU Soccer Complex. The top-seed Sea
Gulls will have three days to prepare for second-seed York (Pa.)
College who they will meet in Saturday's championship game.
Salisbury (14-4-1) freshman Mike Napolitano
picked up where he left off in the CAC quarterfinal game where he
scored four goals. The CAC Athlete of the Week scored the first two
goals for SU to raise his CAC tournament total to six goals in two
games. For the season he has scored 11 times. Napolitano's first
goal came in the 24th minute off of a Kyle
Sterling (two assists) through ball which he buried in the
back of the net to put SU up 1-0. Napolitano's second strike came
off an assist from sophomore Greg Taylor in the
71st minute.
Sophomore Alex Hargrove cashed in on a loose
ball in the Wesley goalie box for his eighth goal of the year at
the 77 minute mark. Senior Andrew Henciak scored
in the closing minutes (87:57) of the game assisted by Sterling to
give the Gulls their final score.
SU goalie Greg Wellinghoff (11-2) went the
distance for the Gulls in the net as he racked up six saves. The
Sea Gull defense recorded its 13th shutout and held fourth-seed
Wesley to only 11 shots (seven on goal) with one team save.
Wesley (7-11-1) net minder Nick Talarico suffered the loss in
the pipes as he saved four shots and gave up all four Sea Gull
scores. The game was physical as both teams combined for 30 fouls
and five yellow cards.
Salisbury will be hosting York (Pa.) College in the
CAC championship game for the fourth time in the last five
years. SU is 2-1 against York in those three previous championship
meetings. The Spartans and Sea Gulls have met the last seven
consecutive years in the CAC tournament. SU is the only team
to defeat York this season with a 1-0 victory on the road back on
September 29.
The championship game will be played at the SU Soccer Complex on
Saturday, November 3. The afternoon game time will be officially
announced later this week.
