Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The top-seed Salisbury
University field hockey team advanced to its 13th consecutive
Capital Athletic Conference championship on Wednesday night with a
3-0 victory over fifth-seed University of Mary Washington under the
lights at Sea Gull Stadium.
Salisbury, ranked No. 3 in the country, will seek to win its 13th
straight CAC title on Saturday afternoon against second-seed St.
Mary's (Md.) College, who defeated third-seed Wesley College, 3-2,
in overtime in the other semifinal game. The title game time is
slated for 1 p.m.
The Sea Gulls (17-1) took advantage of their opportunities in the
second half with three unanswered goals. With just four minutes off
the clock sophomore Lauren Correll scored the
game's first goal and her 20th of the season.
Six minutes later, SU drove into the UMW circle when an Eagle foul
awarded the Gulls a penalty stroke. Senior Danielle
Twilley capitalized on the opportunity as she knocked in
her fifth penalty stroke goal of the season. Senior Ashley
Twigg added SU's final goal of the game with an unassisted
mark with 14 minutes left in the game.
The Eagles (11-9) threatened to score in the waning minutes when
senior Kortni Pedlow made a great defensive play
to preserve the shutout victory in front of senior goalie
Maria Ramoundos (three saves). Ramoundos improved
her season record to a perfect 17-0.
Salisbury went into halftime knotted at 0-0 with Mary Washington.
SU took seven shots to UMW's two attempts and held a 9-2 advantage
in penalty corners. Eagle goalie Chrissy Bowdren (nine saves) made
five saves in the first half to prevent the Gulls from getting on
the board. SU is now 31-6 all time against the Eagles.
