SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's soccer team's bid for a second consecutive Capital Athletic
Conference championship fell short as the Sea Gulls lost to York
(Pa.), 2-0, Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 500 at the SU
Soccer Complex.
The top-seed Sea Gulls (14-3-1) managed only two second half
shots while the second-seed Spartans (13-5-3) scored both of their
goals in the second half to claim the programs' first CAC title in
women's soccer.
The two goals scored by the Spartans are the first goals allowed
in the CAC tournament by the Sea Gulls since their quarterfinal
loss in the 2005 tournament. SU outscored its opponents 7-0 in last
year's tournament and matched that total in this season's
quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.
York's Caitlin Allen scored her second goal of the season in the
66th minute to break a scoreless tie and give the Spartans an 1-0
advantage. Allen played a rebound off a corner kick and put the
ball in the top right corner of the net from 20 yards out for the
eventual game-winner.
The Spartans struck again in the 79th minute as Emily Sullivan
headed in Kaitlyn Harney's corner kick to add the insurance goal
for York.
The Sea Gulls had their chances in the first half as senior
Sara Schmidt hit the post from the top of the box
and headed a corner kick just wide of the net while senior
Kate Weaver was denied from 10 yards out by York's
goalie Meagan Cahill (three saves).
York outshot Salisbury 16-8 for the game and held the advantage
in corner kicks, 10-3. This is the first time the Sea Gulls have
been held scoreless since their 1-0 loss to Richard Stockton on
October 15. SU suffered all three of its losses this season at home
where the maroon and gold were 5-3-1.
Gena Goodson (10-3-1) played a strong game in
goal for Salisbury as she finished with six saves while Cahill
(10-2-3) stopped all three of SU's shots.
The Sea Gulls will now await a possible at-large bid into the
2007 NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament which will be
announced Sunday night.
