SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University women's basketball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference opponent York (Pa.) College 66-62 Saturday afternoon at the Maggs Center. The victory is the first CAC win for SU first-year coach Charisse Mapp. The game was tied six times and saw six lead changes before the Gulls took their final lead with two minutes left in the game.

Salisbury (3-6, 1-2 CAC) jumped out to an eight-point lead four minutes into the game but went into halftime with a slim lead, 28-27. The Sea Gulls found themselves down seven points just six minutes into the second half. The SU stingy defense stepped up and made seven second half steals and scored 14 points off Spartan turnovers. For the game SU scored 22 points off of 24 York turnovers. The Sea Gulls controlled the paint as they outrebounded the Spartans, 43-38.

SU junior Lindsay Martin contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in a great all-around effort for the Sea Gulls. Fellow junior Monica Merkel scored a game-high 18 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore Janay Johnson (13 points, six rebounds) and senior Meghan Phillips (10, five) also led the way for the maroon and gold.

York (6-2, 1-2 CAC) losses its second straight game this week to a CAC opponent. Junior guard Keli Ward led the way for the Spartans with 18 points, four rebounds and three assists.

SU ended the game with 14 steals, which ties a season high mark, 10 fast break points, and 36 points in the paint to hand York its second loss of the season.

Salisbury will return to action in the New Year as it will participate in the Lady Monarch Classic at King's (Pa.) College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on January 4. The Sea Gulls will face Norwich University in the first round at 6 p.m.
