WASHINGTON, D.C- The Salisbury University
women's basketball team traveled to D.C. to take on Catholic
University and came home with an overtime win, 73-71, in a pivotal
Capital Athletic Conference game. Salisbury improved to a perfect
3-0 in overtime games this season.
The Sea Gulls (13-10, 7-6 CAC) trailed by seven points with four
minutes left in regulation. SU hit 5-of-7 free throws down the
stretch to narrow the gap. Salisbury freshman forward
Janay Johnson (13 points, seven
rebounds) hit a game-tying lay up with 16 seconds remaining to send
the Gulls into the extra period. Johnson put in five points and
grabbed three rebounds in the final four minutes.
In overtime the game remained tight and was knotted up at 71
apiece with 33 seconds to play. Salisbury freshman Brianna
Simpson grabbed the rebound off a Meghan
Phillips potential game-winner and was fouled during her
put back attempt as time expired. Simpson nailed both shots from
the line to seal the deal for Salisbury.
The Gulls were led by Phillips who put in a team-high 16 points,
and seniors Jessica Mills and Jenna
Peters who both added double figure outputs.
Catholic (14-9, 6-6 CAC) had four players contribute in double
digits including forward Shannon Mertz who had a game-high 20
points in 33 minutes of action.
Salisbury split the season series with Catholic after being
upset at home, 56-51, on January 17. The Sea Gulls return home on
Valentine's Day for their final CAC game of the season to take on
the Saints of Marymount who won the first meeting, 62-56.
