Fredericksburg, Va. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday
evening as the top seed and 9th ranked Mary Washington Eagles
handed the fourth seed Sea Gulls a 79-58 loss in the semifinals of
the Capital Athletic Conference tournament.
Salisbury (15-11) was led by senior Jessica
Mills who scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed seven
rebounds while fellow seniors Meghan Klug and
Jenna Peters each added seven points.
The Sea Gulls scored the first two buckets of the game as junior
Meghan Phillips opened up with a jumper and Peters
added a layup just under a minute into the game. Mary Washington
(25-2) quickly tied the game up at the 18 minute mark but Salisbury
answered back with a Lindsey Martin (4 points)
score to take a 6-4 lead.
UMW would score the next six points and Salisbury would never
lead again.
The Eagles built as large as a nine point lead, 21-12, in the
first half at the 10 mark but the resilient Sea Gulls wouldn't go
away. SU pulled to within one point with seven minutes left in the
half and later weathered an Eagle attempt at a run to keep the
deficit within reach at six points, 28-22.
Salisbury trailed by four with 10 seconds left in the half as
Mills hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to two, 34-32, but
UMW's Amanda Bates (10 points) hit a three pointer as time expired
to give the Eagles a 37-32 lead at the break.
The Sea Gulls got as close as one point, 41-40, in the second
half with 18 minute to play but Mary Washington was too much for
Salisbury. The Eagles went on a 33-7 run over the next eight
minutes to build a 74-47 lead.
The Eagles had four players score in double-figures led by
Debbie Bruen who had a game-high 19 points.
The Sea Gulls were held to 30 percent shooting on the night
while the Eagles hit on 48 percent of their shots.
This is the second time in the past three seasons that Mary
Washington has ended the Salisbury season. In the 2004-05 season
UMW defeated SU in the CAC championship, 84-62.
