SALISBURY, Md. - The top-ranked Salisbury
University men's lacrosse team won its Capital Athletic Conference
quarterfinal game against Catholic University 27-2 Tuesday at Sea
Gull Stadium. The No. 1 seed Sea Gulls made quick work of the
eighth-seeded Cardinals, who played their final CAC men's lacrosse
game ever. Catholic will play next year in the newly formed
Landmark Conference.
Salisbury (16-0) was led by junior Matt Hickman
who scored a game-high five goals while senior Eric
Bishop (four goals and two assists) and sophomore
Kylor Berkman (three goals and three assists)
posted six-point games, respectively. SU had 12 different goal
scorers and seven student-athletes who scored two or more goals.
The Sea Gulls assisted 17 of their 27 goals as junior Brett
Yoder dished out a game-high four assists.
The Sea Gulls outshot the Cardinals 56-9 as Catholic didn't post
its first shot until midway through the second quarter. SU won
25-of-33 faceoffs, scooped up 71 ground balls, caused 23 of
Catholic's 42 turnovers and was 35-of-37 on clears. SU has now won
55 straight at Sea Gull Stadium.
SU senior goalie Max Zarchin (16-0) started the
game but gave way to sophomore Riley Clark (one
save) with less then five minutes to go in the first quarter.
Salisbury scored the game's first 14 goals before the Cardinals
struck at the 8:11 mark in the second quarter on a Mike Groh goal.
CUA posted another goal before the Gulls netted one more before the
half where they led 15-2. SU outscored CUA 12-0 in the second
half.
The highlight goal of the game was Berkman's unassisted goal at
the 11:23 mark in the second quarter. The midfielder was on the
left hand side of Catholic's goal and backed his defender down near
the crease before whipping his stick behind his back and depositing
the ball into the back of the net.
The Sea Gulls will host No. 5 seed Goucher College at 4 p.m.,
Friday, April 20 at Sea Gull Stadium. The Gophers upset No. 4 seed
York (Pa.) College 7-6 on the road Tuesday. SU defeated Goucher
19-4 earlier this season at home.
