SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 8 Salisbury University
field hockey team continued its dominance at home as the Sea Gulls
made quick work of in-state rival Frostburg State University on
Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 shutout before 250 at Sea Gull
Stadium.
Salisbury (6-1) received balance scoring as five different Sea
Gulls found the back of the Frostburg (2-3) cage. SU dominated the
first half as it outshot the Bobcats 14-0 and led 3-0 at the break.
SU got on the board 11 minutes into the game as sophomore
Lauren Correll scored an unassisted goal in a
scramble in front of the Bobcat cage. The goal was Correll's fifth
goal of the season. Salisbury scored 15 minutes later as freshman
midfielder Abby Tedford scored her first goal of
her collegiate career. Two minutes later senior Danielle
Twilley scored her team-high sixth goal of the season on a
penalty stroke that beat FSU goalie Amanda Runion (five saves).
In the second half, Salisbury faced a new Frostburg goalie in
Amanda Schemm (two saves) but got the same result as the Gulls
scored twice late in the game. Sophomore Beverly
Beladino went on a fast break for SU and was 1-on-1 with
Schemm before Beladino squeaked the ball into the lower left
corner. The unassisted goal was Beladino's fifth of the season. She
added an assist nine minutes later as sophomore midfielder
Caitlyn Ruffus knocked home the Beladino assist.
Ruffus was left wide open on the left side of the goal as she
scored her first goal of the season at the 69:37 mark.
The Sea Gulls outshot the Bobcats 21-3 and took 14 penalty
corners. FSU had four penalty corners for the game, all in the
second half. Salisbury is now 31-7-1 all-time against Frostburg
State.
Salisbury ends its five-game homestand with a perfect 5-0 record
and will travel to Westminster, Md., on Tuesday, September 18, for
another in-state non-conference game.
