WASHINGTON, D.C. - The
Salisbury University women's basketball team turned in its largest
margin of victory this season as the Sea Gulls routed Gallaudet
University by 55 points, 96-41, in a Capital Athletic Conference
game on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Sea Gulls (5-9, 2-3 CAC) scored a season-high 96 points, 24
more than the previous mark of 72, as the maroon and gold shot a
season best 55 percent from the field. SU dominated in the paint as
it outscored Gallaudet, 44-12. The Sea Gulls were able to play
their entire roster as the majority of the team saw at least 12
minutes of action apiece.
Salisbury led from start to finish as the Sea Gulls took a 45-16
lead into halftime.
The Sea Gulls had five players reach double figures in scoring.
Junior Monica Merkel led all-scorers with 23
points as the SU guard added six rebounds, four assists and three
steals to her stat line. Sophomore Janay Johnson
(14 points), junior Lindsay Martin (13 points),
senior Meghan Phillips (11 points) and sophomore
Shaniece Roseborough (10 points) reached double
digits.
Two individual season-high marks were made in the win as junior
Marissa Manzo (nine points) grabbed 16 rebounds
and freshman Carolyn Weis made 11 assists.
Gallaudet's 41-points is the lowest score by a SU opponent this
season. Gallaudet (1-10, 0-6 CAC) forward Nukeitra Hayes led the
Bison with 14 points and eight rebounds. The Bison shot 29.8
percent from the field for the game.
The 55-point margin of victory is the largest since last season
when the Sea Gulls defeated the Bison 87-25 (62-point difference)
on February 3 at home.
Salisbury will next be in action on Wednesday, January 16, with
a road trip to Villa Julie College for a 6 p.m. conference game.
