Ewing, N.J. - The Salisbury
University women's basketball team was held to a season-low 36
points on Monday evening as The College of New Jersey defeated the
visiting Sea Gulls, 47-36. TCNJ (9-3) held a slim one-point
halftime lead, 22-21, over Salisbury (4-8) as the maroon and gold
only managed 15 points in the second half of the defensive game.
Junior Monica Merkel paced the Sea Gulls with
11 points, nine of which were scored in the first half. SU had 10
different players score at least one point in the loss. Sophomore
Kylie Hall led the team with eight rebounds and
two assists.
The 47 points is a season-low for TCNJ. Junior center Hillary
Klimowicz earned her eighth double-double of the season as she
scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lions. TCNJ
freshman forward Kelsey Kutch was the other Lion in double figures
as she scored 10 points, recorded nine rebounds and made nine
steals. TCNJ scored 32 of its 47 points in the paint.
The two teams were a combined 0-for-12 from three-point range in
the first half and 1-for-19 for the game. The two teams grabbed 47
rebounds apiece. Salisbury shot 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from the
field while TCNJ shot 31.9 percent (21-of-67).
TCNJ began the second half on a 10-0 run as Salisbury was held
scoreless for six minutes until the 13:52 mark. The win is the
third straight for TCNJ while SU has dropped its last two games.
Salisbury will host Rt. 13 rival Wesley College on Wednesday
evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Maggs Center in a Capital Athletic
Conference game.
