DOVER, Del. - The No. 18 Salisbury University
men's soccer team let a two-goal lead slip through its fingers
against Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College on the road
Wednesday night.
Salisbury (8-2-1, 1-2 CAC) allowed back-to-back goals by Wesley's
Matt Nimmerichter, in less than two minutes, late in the
game to give the Wolverines the upset win. The Sea Gulls had 13
second half shots, six on goal, but could not find an equalizer
down the stretch.
This is the second straight loss for the Sea Gulls; both losses
have been in conference play.
Junior Kyle Sterling got the Gulls on the board
first in the 23rd minute off an assist from sophomore Mike
Napolitano. Salisbury led 1-0 at halftime.
Sterling assisted Salisbury's second goal of the game, a minute
into the second half, when sophomore Chris Finney
found the back of the net.
The maroon and gold held the Wolverines (6-3-1, 2-1 CAC)
scoreless until Omar De Los Santos snapped the Wesley scoring
drought in the 57th minute to cut the Sea Gull lead in half,
2-1. Nimmerichter, a transfer from York (Pa.)
College, tied the game in the 72nd minute on a header off a
free kick that was estimated to be 40-yards out. A minute and 40
seconds later, Nimmerichter was awarded a penalty kick and scored
the game-winner. Nimmerichter's goals are the first of the season
for him.
Wesley goalie Nick Talarico made 10 saves in the game for the
Wolverines as the Gulls placed 12 shots on goal in 24 attempts. SU
goalie Greg Wellinghoff (three saves) played 83
minutes as junior Joshua Scotton closed out the
game. The Wolverines had nine shots, six in the second half.
Salisbury will next host Roanoke College in an important in-region
game on Saturday, October 4, at 1 p.m. at the SU Soccer Complex.
