Jessilonis, Kaufman spur huge second half for Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. - Sophomore Samantha Kaufman and freshman Sarah Jessilonis combined to score three goals in a five-minute span to break open a 1-0 game midway through the second half for the Salisbury University women's soccer team. The Sea Gulls went on to defeat visiting Marymount (Va.) University, 5-0, on Wednesday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference contest at the SU Soccer Complex.

Salisbury (5-4-4, 3-0-2 CAC) took a 1-0 lead into the half as Jessilonis scored her first goal of the game off an assist from junior defender Hillary Grove. It was only a matter of time in the second half before Salisbury's shots (16 in the second half) began to find the back of the Marymount (2-10-1, 0-5-0 CAC) net.

Jessilonis scored her team leading fourth goal of the season on an unassisted blast from the left side of the goalie box and found the lower right corner of the net. The Saints received a yellow card, minutes later, in the goalie box and awarded a penalty kick to the Sea Gulls. Kaufman stepped up and nailed her first goal of the season as she beat Marymount goalie Sara Horne (five saves) on the shot. Kaufman struck again off a corner kick at the 69:27 mark to give SU the 4-0 lead. Freshman defender Danielle Crowley scored her second goal of the season on a shot at the top of the goalie box in the 81st minute.

Salisbury goalie Gena Goodson (5-4-4) recorded her sixth shutout of the season as she made two saves in the win. The Sea Gulls outshot the Saints, 23-4, and took three corner kicks compared to Marymount's two. The loss is the seventh straight for the Saints.

These two teams have met every year since 1994, when Salisbury began its varsity women's soccer program. The Sea Gulls hold a commanding 20-0-0 series record against the Saints.

Salisbury will remain in conference and head to Frederick, Md., on Saturday, October 18, at 1 p.m. to face Hood College.
