SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 9 Salisbury University
field hockey team concluded its regular-season schedule Wednesday
night at Sea Gull Stadium with a 1-0 victory over Catholic
University of America in a non-conference game.
Salisbury (13-3) and Catholic (10-6) battled for over 63 minutes
before the Sea Gulls broke through in the 64th minute with the lone
goal of the night. Junior Beverly Beladino
redirected a pass from sophomore Courtney Webster,
off a penalty corner, to place the Sea Gulls on the board with six
minutes left in the game.
The Gulls outshot the Cardinals, 11-3, as the maroon and gold
placed seven shots on goal. SU also held a 9-4 edge in penalty
corners. Junior Michelle Rowe blasted a shot in
the 25th minute that beat Catholic goalie Marian Cassilly (four
saves) but was blocked at the last moment by midfielder Caroline
Reilly, who dove in front of the cage. In the second half, freshman
Caitlin Walker redirected a pass by
Kandice Hancock towards the Catholic goal but
Cardinal back Emily Sencindiver made the defensive save at the
57:50 mark.
Sea Gull goalie Anna Cooke (9-1) made three
saves in the seventh shutout she has earned this season. The SU
defense anchored by senior Heather Berntsen,
sophomore Katie Fost and freshmen Tara
McGovern and Shannon Hanratty notched the
10th shutout for the Sea Gulls this season. This was the final home
regular-season game for Berntsen, who has played in 43 games for
the Gulls in four seasons.
Salisbury, the top seed in the upcoming CAC tournament, will
host a conference semifinal game on Wednesday, November 5, at Sea
Gull Stadium. SU will face the winner between Wesley College and
Stevenson University, who face each other in a conference
first-round game this weekend. The Sea Gulls have won 13 straight
CAC championships. The time for the semifinal game will be
determined after the first round of action.
