Salisbury not scared of Green Terror, post fourth straight shutout

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 9 Salisbury University field hockey team jumped out to an early lead against in-state rival McDaniel College and never looked back on Wednesday evening at Sea Gull Stadium. Salisbury (9-2) posted its fourth straight shutout, eighth overall, in the 2-0 win over the Green Terror (6-6).

Salisbury junior Beverly Beladino scored the game's first goal three minutes into the game. Beladino got her stick on the ball that rebounded off of McDaniel goalie Erika Wawzyanick (10 saves) and fired it into the cage. The goal was Beladino's third of the season. She has scored her three goals in the past two games for the maroon and gold.

The Sea Gulls took the 1-0 lead into the half where SU outshot McDaniel, 10-0.

In the second half, Salisbury continued to apply pressure on the McDaniel cage as the Sea Gulls took 13 shots and forced seven penalty corners. SU scored the final goal in the 51st minute when junior Lauren Correll scored her 10th goal of the season off another rebound. Correll's goal was unassisted.

For the game Salisbury outshot McDaniel, 23-1. SU took 14 corners and only allowed one second half corner to the Green Terror. SU goalie Anna Cooke earned the shutout in the cage as she is now 5-0 for the season. The Sea Gulls hold a 9-1 series advantage over the Green Terror.

The Sea Gulls continue their homestand on Sunday, October 12, when they welcome Capital Athletic Conference foe Hood College to town for a 2 p.m. contest. This game was originally scheduled for September 3 on the road but was delayed due to poor field conditions.
