Marlins hook Sea Gulls on the road, Johnson scores career-high

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury University women's basketball fell to Virginia Wesleyan College, 91-61, Wednesday night at the Batten Center. The loss marked the end of a three-game road trip to open the season for SU as the Gulls will make their home debut Saturday afternoon in the Maggs Center.

SU was led by junior Janay Johnson's double-double as she scored 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Johnson made 9-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line, caused two steals, recorded an assist and a blocked shot. The 27-point total was a career-high for the Baltimore native and marked the highest point total in a game for a Gull since December 2, 2006 when Meghan Phillips scored 27 against York (Pa.) College.

Salisbury (0-3) played a great first half in the season and home opener for the Marlins (1-0). There were four lead changes and one tie as Virginia Wesleyan clung to a 38-37 lead at the break. In the second half, the Marlins went on a 15-2 run in the first few minutes to open the game up. VWC closed the game on a 16-2 spurt as the Marlins shot 56 percent from the field in the half.

Freshman Glen Charlton scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half as she added an assist and six rebounds in the loss. Junior forward Kylie Hall scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds while freshman Katharine Curran (four points) led the Sea Gulls with three assists.

The Marlins were led by three double-digit point scorers in Jill Weston (31 points), Tonia Jones (13) and Maggie Smith (10). VWC out rebounded the Gulls 46-37 and shot 45 percent from the field for the game.

The maroon and gold will welcome No. 18 The College of New Jersey (2-1) to the Maggs Center for an afternoon showdown at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 22.
