York slips by Salisbury in CAC Semifinals, Spartans advance in shootout

SALISBURY, Md. - Top-seed Salisbury University lost in the Capital Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament semifinal round on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex against fourth-seed York (Pa.) College. York (11-6-2), the defending conference champions, advances to the CAC championship game, this Saturday, as it won the penalty kick shootout 3-1.

The two teams were knotted at 1-1 at the end regulation and played two 10-minute overtime periods before the game was ultimately determined by a shootout.

York freshman forward Rachel Allen scored the third and final penalty kick goal for the Spartans in the shootout. Salisbury had a chance to prolong the shootout on its fourth shot attempt by sophomore midfielder Sarah Koenig but York goalie Desiree Halaka made the save. Sea Gull co-captain Hillary Grove scored SU's only penalty kick attempt as she started the shootout with a goal. SU shot its next two attempts wide right. Halaka came off the York bench for the shootout to replace freshman goalie Sarah Spanarkel (three saves) who played 110 minutes. SU senior goalie Gena Goodson (six saves) played the entire game and was in the net during the shootout for the Sea Gulls.

The two teams played a scoreless first half as York led 8-1 in shots.

In the second half, Salisbury got on the scoreboard first when freshman Sarah Jessilonis headed in her seventh goal of the season off a Katie Marshall assist in the 49th minute.

York had a good look at the Sea Gull goal with 27 minutes left in regulation when junior Lauren Stewart placed a shot on goal that was saved by Goodson. A minute later the rain picked up along with the pressure the Spartan offense applied on the Sea Gull defense. York defender Kali Macgregor had a header hit the SU crossbar in the 70th minute. Later in the half, the Spartans received two of their eight corner kick attempts in the second half as SU had trouble clearing the ball. Sophomore Steph Mergler scored the equalizer for York with just over five minutes left in the game. SU could not get the ball out of the goalie box as Mergler charged in and placed the ball just out of the reach of a diving Goodson on the right hand side of the goal to knot the game at 1-1.

Salisbury's best opportunity in overtime came with one minute left in the second overtime period. The Sea Gulls created a fast break and junior co-captain Christina Eury was left 1-on-1 with York's goalie but her hard shot was saved by Spanarkel.

The game mirrored the regular-season meeting between the two teams where Salisbury won 1-0 in double overtime on a last second goal by Jessilonis on a rainy September 27 afternoon.

This is Salisbury's fifth tie of the season, a new program record, and the seventh overtime game the Sea Gulls have played this season.

York outshot Salisbury 27-9, including 7-3 in the overtime periods, and took 13 corner kicks. SU only had two corner kicks in the first half.

Second-seed St. Mary's (Md.) College won the other CAC semifinal game on Tuesday as the Seahawks defeated sixth-seed Hood College, 2-0. St. Mary's will host the CAC championship game on Saturday.
