ARLINGTON, Va. - Junior guard Monica
Merkel's double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, both
game-highs, was not enough as Salisbury University lost 69-64 in
Wednesday evening's Capital Athletic Conference women's basketball
game against Marymount (Va.) University on the road before a crowd
of 325 in the Verizon Sports Arena.
Salisbury (10-14, 7-8 CAC) led early, 16-6, five minutes into
the contest but Marymount (21-3, 13-2 CAC) quickly erased the Sea
Gull advantage. The Saints went on an 18-7 run and later stretched
their lead to eight as Marymount led 42-34 at halftime.
This is the first time the Saints have swept a regular-season
series with the Sea Gulls since 2000. Marymount defeated Salisbury
61-52 on January 19 at the Maggs Center.
Merkel, who scored 16 of her 20 points in the first half, was
held in check by the Saints' defense in the second half. Fellow
junior guard Lindsay Martin (17 points, five
rebounds) was the other Gull to score double figures. Sophomore
forward Janay Johnson (seven points) grabbed 11
rebounds in the loss for the maroon and gold.
Marymount had three players reach double digits in the victory
led by freshman Beth Wiggins' career-high 19 points and eight
rebounds. Terell White added 15 points, six assists and five
rebounds while teammate Stephanie Witko (11 points, 10 rebounds)
recorded a double-double.
The Sea Gulls shot 38.7 percent from the field and outrebounded the
Saints, 40-36. Marymount went 21-for-25 from the free-throw line
(84 percent) as it shot 41.8 percent from the field.
Salisbury will close out its regular-season schedule on the road
Saturday, February 23, in Frederick, Md., against Hood College at 2
p.m.
