YORK, Pa. - Freshman Chante
McKinney has been selective from behind the three-point
line this season for the Salisbury University women's basketball
team. Recently, the shifty guard has picked the right times to
throw up a shot from long range. McKinney's first and only
three-pointer on Wednesday night was the difference as the Sea
Gulls took down York (Pa.) College, 58-55, in a Capital Athletic
Conference game at the Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
McKinney (seven points) drained the game-winner with 1:40 left
on the scoreboard as she broke the sixth tie of the game. This is
the second straight game McKinney has been 1-for-1 from three-point
range. She is 4-for-19 for the season, 3-for-5 in the past five
games.
Salisbury's defense held off the third-place Spartans (15-6, 7-5
CAC) for the final minute to secure the win. The Sea Gulls (8-12,
5-6 CAC) have won four of their past seven conference games.
SU outscored York 9-3 to in the final two minutes of the first
half as the maroon and gold took a 31-29 lead into halftime. Junior
guard Lindsay Martin scored two of her game-high
19 points with two seconds left in the half on a lay-up. She added
four rebounds, four steals and three assists in the win.
In the second half, the Sea Gulls built their biggest lead,
41-31, as they went on a 10-2 run four minutes in. Sophomore
forward Kylie Hall (six points, 12 rebounds)
contributed during the run as she scored two buckets in the low
post.
Sophomore guard Shaniece Roseborough made her
first collegiate start of her career and scored 12 points, one shy
of her career-high. She added four rebounds, four assists and two
steals. Junior guard Monica Merkel scored 10
points and matched Hall's rebound total.
The two teams both scored 34 points in the paint and turned the
ball over 26 times. The Sea Gulls converted the Spartan turnovers
into 21 points. SU outrebounded York, 43-40, as the Gulls shot 39.4
percent from the field.
Kristen Daly (16 points, eight rebounds) and Keli Ward (14
points) led York as the Spartans lost their second straight game.
Salisbury remains on the road this weekend as the Sea Gulls
travel up Rt. 13 to face Wesley College for a 2 p.m. CAC matchup.
