DOVER, Del. - It was a tale of two halves for
the Salisbury University women's basketball team on Saturday
afternoon against Rt. 13 rival Wesley College at the Wentworth
Gymnasium in Dover, Del.
The Sea Gulls held a 41-25 advantage at the half but the second
half was a different story in this Capital Athletic Conference
game. Salisbury (8-13, 5-7 CAC) allowed Wesley (11-10, 7-5 CAC) to
get back into the game as the Wolverines used a series of runs to
chip away at the Sea Gulls' lead. In the end, the Wolverines were
victorious 76-68.
Wesley trailed, 45-32, with 16:25 left in the second half but
quickly tied the game in just over three minutes as the Wolverines
went on a 13-0 spurt to knot the game at 45. Salisbury regained the
lead but five minutes later the game was tied for the third and
final time at 54. Wesley controlled the rest of the game en route
to its fourth win in five games.
SU forward Kylie Hall (nine points, nine
rebounds) drained two free throws with 44 seconds left in the game
to pull the Sea Gulls to within four, 72-68. Wesley iced the game
with four foul shots of its own as the Gulls missed two shots from
the field. The Wolverines shot 64.3 percent from the floor in the
second half as they outscored the Gulls, 51-27.
Salisbury shot 45.9 percent from the field in the first half but
only 27.0 percent in the second half (36.5 percent for the game).
The Sea Gulls held a slight edge in the paint, 30-28, received 11
points from their bench and outrebounded Wesley, 54-38.
For the fifth time this season Salisbury's Monica
Merkel (21 points) surpassed the 20-point plateau for the
Sea Gulls. The junior guard also pulled down a season-high 15
rebounds.
SU sophomore Shaniece Roseborough scored a
career-high 15 points, junior Lindsay Martin added
12 points while sophomore Janay Johnson scored
nine and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.
Wesley was led by the trio of Michele Mules (23 points), Colleen
Thomas (21 points, six rebounds) and Angie Owens (16 points, 12
rebounds).
Salisbury returns home for a conference game against Gallaudet
University on Wednesday, February 13, at 5:30 p.m. as part of
"Coaches vs. Cancer" night at the Maggs Center.
