VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Salisbury University
women's soccer team engaged in a defensive showdown Wednesday night
as they tied the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College 0-0 in double
overtime.
Salisbury (2-1-1) entered the game riding a three-game unbeaten
streak. Meanwhile, VWC (0-2-2) entered the game winless
and only three goals to account for. Both trends would
continue as the game played out to be a defensive battle with Sea
Gull senior stalwart Gena Goodson stifling in
goal. She made seven saves in regulation and one in overtime.
Despite the effort of Goodson, SU did not put much together on the
offensive side of the ball. The maroon and gold only mustered seven
shots on the day, three of which were on goal. Senior forward
Dana Passucci and junior defenseman
Colleen Galligan led the offensive output with two
shots apiece.
The Marlins almost escaped with the victory with a goal that was
scored in the second half, but was wiped off due to an offsides
penalty. The Marlins were led by senior Danielle Fiedler who
registered four shots, one on goal, and junior goalkeeper Allison
Lennox (three saves).
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Salisbury, 17-7, while the Sea Gulls
held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. The game proved to be very
physical with the Marlins being called for 16 fouls to Salisbury's
12.
This is Salisbury's second straight double overtime tie. SU tied
No. 6 Lynchburg 1-1 last Sunday.
The Sea Gulls will play again on Saturday, September 13, in their
home opener against Ursinus College at 1 p.m. Salisbury
defeated Ursinus 2-1 last season.
