SALISBURY, Md. - It was a clean sweep for the
No. 3 Salisbury University field hockey team as the Sea Gulls won
their invitational by a combined score of 17-0 in three games. SU
completed the sweep on Sunday with a 6-0 win over in-state rival
Frostburg State University.
Salisbury (5-0) is 62-4 all-time in the SU Invitational during
the Coach Dawn Chamberlin era (22 years).
Frostburg State finished second in the invitational with a 2-1
record. This was the first appearance for the Bobcats (5-2) in the
SU Invitational since 1996.
Salisbury junior Caitlyn Ruffus led all scorers
with two goals as she scored twice in the final minutes of the
first half. Ruffus scored her first goal of the season at the 33:48
mark off an assist from freshman Paige Lowrey. SU
regained possession immediately on the restart. Junior forward
Lauren Correll darted down the left side of the
field on a breakaway and found Ruffus wide open in front of the
Frostburg cage for the goal with 34 seconds before the half.
Salisbury led 4-0 at the intermission.
Sophomore Kandice Hancock scored her fourth
straight goal, in as many games, as she scored three minutes into
the game to give the maroon and gold the early lead. Fellow
sophomore Courtney Webster (two assists) assisted
on Hancock's goal and junior Michelle Rowe's goal
11 minutes later.
In the second half, SU freshmen Kelsey Fetsko
and Alison Bloodsworth scored their first
collegiate goals to put the game away for the Gulls. Freshman
midfielder Tara Williams assisted Bloodsworth on
her goal at the 67:25 mark.
Frostburg State goalie Samantha Foland made seven saves in the
loss. SU sophomore goalie Claire Davey-Karlson
earned the win as she played 37 minutes and was relieved by
Anna Cooke (two saves) in the second half.
Salisbury outshot Frostburg State 17-2 and took 19 penalty
corners to the Bobcats' five.
In the first game on Sunday, SUNY Brockport defeated Denison
2-1. The Golden Eagles (4-3) went 1-2 for the weekend, while the
Big Red (2-3) did not win a game.
SU completes the four-game home stand with a 4-0 record and will
now hit the road for two weeks where the maroon and gold will face
three top 10 teams in an eight-day span. SU will first travel to
Baltimore to face No. 10 Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday,
September 17, at 7 p.m. The Sea Gulls will then face No. 4 Messiah
College (September 20) and No. 9 Rowan University (September 24).
