TOWSON, Md. - For the second straight game
the No. 17 Salisbury University men's soccer team was forced
to play a double overtime game but this time the Sea Gulls could
not record the win. SU suffered its first tie of the season as the
Gulls played to a 1-1 draw with Goucher College on the road Tuesday
in a non-conference game.
Salisbury (8-0-1) continues its unbeaten streak that stretches
17 games since October 17, 2007.
Goucher (4-3-1) tied the game in the 86th minute when Tim
McMullen assisted Galen Guindon for the goal. The SU defense has
now surrendered a lead in two consecutive games in the waning
minutes of play. Lynchburg scored the game tying goal last Saturday
in the 89th minute against Salisbury. The Sea Gulls were able to
pull out the 2-1 victory in the 102nd minute.
Salisbury took seven of its 17 shots in the extra periods but
could not get the ball past Goucher goalie Justin Holbrook (eight
saves). SU junior goalie Greg Wellinghoff made two
saves in the tie. Goucher took one shot in the overtime periods,
six total for the game. The Sea Gulls took 10 corner kicks while
the Gophers had six.
The two teams played a scoreless first half. SU sophomore
Mike Napolitano got the maroon and gold on the
board with his team best fifth goal of the season in the 60th
minute off a Benjamin Reed assist. Reed has a
team-high four assists this season.
This is the first tie in the series with Goucher, who used to be
a member of the Capital Athletic Conference. Salisbury leads the
series 16-0-1. The first meeting between the two teams happened in
1993.
Salisbury will next prepare for its highly anticipated showdown
with No. 3 York (Pa.) College on Saturday, September 27, at 2:30
p.m. at the SU Soccer Complex. The Sea Gulls, the defending CAC
champions, beat the Spartans twice last season.
