SALISBURY, Md. - Freshman Sarah
Jessilonis scored her first collegiate goal for Salisbury
University in exciting fashion as she took a corner kick pass
from senior Kelli Salter and used her knee to put
the ball into the net. Jessilonis goal ended Saturday's
Capital Athletic Conference women's soccer double overtime game
with York (Pa.) College as Salisbury won 1-0 on a rainy day at the
SU Soccer Complex.
The two teams were scoreless for over 109 minutes before the Sea
Gulls (4-2-3, 2-0-1 CAC) ended the game with less than 42 seconds
left in the second overtime period. SU hands York (4-3-1, 2-1-0
CAC) its first loss in conference play. The Spartans are the
defending CAC champions.
Last season, the Sea Gulls lost to York 2-0 in the CAC
championship game held in Salisbury, Md. SU was the top-seed in the
tournament.
The Sea Gulls were outshot 15-2 in regulation but fought hard
for the entire match as senior goalie Gena Goodson
made six saves to keep the Gulls in a position to win. The Gulls
got off three shots in the second overtime period to keep York
goalie Desiree Halaka (two saves) busy until the end.
This is the second time in a week that the Sea Gulls have played
a double overtime game. Last Saturday, SU tied Stevenson College
0-0 to give the Sea Gulls their third tie of the season.
Salisbury concludes its four-game homestand with 2-1-1 record
and will hit the road to face a tough in-region team on Wednesday,
October 1, as the Sea Gulls go up against Christopher Newport
University on the road at 6 p.m.
