Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team edged out visiting Stevenson University
56-52 in a Capital Athletic Conference game on Monday evening at
the Maggs Center.
Junior forward Janay Johnson led the way for
the Sea Gulls (3-13, 3-4 CAC) as she scored the go ahead jumper in
the paint with four seconds left in the game to give the maroon and
gold a 54-52 lead. Johnson was fouled on the play and went to the
free-throw line. She wasn't able to convert the three-point play
but teammate Kylie Hall (11 rebounds) grabbed the
rebound and found an open Glen Charlton (nine
points, two steals) under the basket for the easy lay-up as time
expired.
Johnson earned her second double-double of the season as she
scored a game-high 20 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
Freshman Katharine Curran (15 points, eight
rebounds) continued her recent scoring streak as she reached double
figures in points for the second time in three days. Curran played
all 40 minutes in the victory.
Salisbury trailed Stevenson, 23-19, with four minutes left in
the first half but used a 10-0 spurt to give the Sea Gulls a 29-23
lead at the half.
In the first half, the Gulls outrebounded the Mustangs 19-8 and
shot a blistering 87.5 percent from the free-throw line. The two
teams shot a respectable 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from the field.
Stevenson (3-12, 1-5 CAC) regained the lead in the second half
but allowed the Gulls to tie the game at 42 on a three-pointer by
Curran with 8:32 left. The two teams played close the final eight
minutes of play before Johnson gave SU the lead for good in the
final seconds.
Salisbury has won the last three contests against Stevenson dating
back to last season.
The Mustangs were led by senior guard Tara Galvin as she collected
a team-high 19 points. Freshman Joy Bettis finished in
double-digits with 10 points and senior forward Ashley Burrell had
a team-high eight rebounds in the loss.
The Sea Gulls will hit the road for three consecutive CAC games.
The trip begins Wednesday, January 21, at 6 p.m. in Arlington, Va.,
against No. 18 Marymount (Va.) University.
