ARLINGTON, Va. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team dropped a 72-53 decision to No. 16
Marymount (Va.) University in a Capital Athletic
Conference contest on Wednesday night at Verizon Sports Arena
in Arlington, Va.
Salisbury (3-14, 3-5 CAC) was led by junior forward
Janay Johnson, who fell just short of a
double-double with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds.
Freshman guard Katharine Curran tallied her third
straight game with double-digit points with an 11 point effort.
Sophomore guard Chante McKinney (seven rebounds)
and freshman guard Meghan Dunn each had six
points.
Salisbury came out of the gates strong and posted a five point
lead, 7-2, four minutes into the game. Marymount (13-3, 6-1 CAC)
was not fazed and countered the SU push with a 13-2 run of its own
as the Saints held a 15-9 lead at the 13:26 mark of the first half.
The teams would trade baskets until the Saints used consecutive
three-pointers by Amanda Billy (eight points) and Beth Wiggins
(five points) to take a 14 point lead, 28-14, with a little over
six minutes remaining. The Sea Gull deficit dropped to ten points
on a layup by Johnson with nine seconds remaining but Marymount's
Terrell White made a jumper at the buzzer to extend the Saint lead
to 12 points, 36-24, at halftime. SU was paced by 11 first half
points by Johnson.
The two teams would trade baskets to begin the second half.
Salisbury dropped the Marymount lead to 11 points, 48-36, nine
minutes into the half on a jumper by Johnson. The maroon and gold
would not get any closer as the Saints used a 7-0 run three minutes
later to claim a 19 point lead and put the game away.
Marymount had three players record double-digit point totals.
Kathleen Brown led the Saints with a 19 point, six rebound effort.
Meredith Levison (12 points) and Jackie Bohenek (11 points) helped
pace the Marymount offense. The Saints had ten players record at
least one point.
