Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball team notched another win to its season total
with a 76-60 victory over Hood College on Saturday afternoon in a
Capital Athletic Conference contest in Frederick, Md.
The Sea Gulls set many season-highs in the victory. The 76
points scored surpassed the previous season-high of 68, which SU
set last Wednesday in its 68-45 victory over Gallaudet University.
Salisbury also had season-highs in field goals made (31), field
goal attempts (68), field goal percentage (45.6 percent), assists
(16), three-pointers made (five) and three-pointers attempted (14).
Salisbury (4-14, 4-5 CAC) used a collective team effort to put
away the Blazers. The Sea Gulls had five of eight players recorded
double-digit point totals and were led by junior forward
Janay Johnson (16 points, 11 rebounds), who
recorded her third double-double of the season. Freshman guard
Katharine Curran (17 points, nine rebounds, seven
assists) registered her fourth straight game with double-digit
points. Junior Kylie Hall (12 points, eight
rebounds) and sophomore guard Chante McKinney (11
points) helped pace the SU offense. McKinney, who tied a
season-high in points, was masterful with the ball as she had seven
assists and just one turnover. Freshman guard Glen
Charlton was the final Sea Gull in double-digits with 10
points.
Salisbury wasted no time jumping on Hood as the Sea Gulls stole
the ball on the opening possession and capped it off with a jumper
from Johnson. The game was close early as Hood used a three-pointer
by Brianna Raithel to tie the score, 6-6, at the 17:21 mark. Hall
tallied a jumper seconds later and the Gulls were able to break out
to a lead they would never relinquish. SU marched into halftime
with a commanding lead, 42-33. Salisbury shot 17-33 (52 percent)
from the field in the first half. The Sea Gulls grabbed 23 rebounds
at halftime, 13 of which were offensive.
The Sea Gulls came out of the gates strong in to begin the
second half. Curran buried a three-pointer almost five minutes in
to highlight a 10-2 run and extend the SU lead to 14 points. The
maroon and gold would hold a double-digit advantage for the rest of
game and would post a lead of 20 points when freshman guard
Meghan Dunn made a jumper with three minutes
remaining.
Hood (3-14, 1-7 CAC) had three players score double-digit point
totals. The Blazers were led by junior Jennifer Wilson, who
collected a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Senior
guards Sara Wastler and Jessica Parrish each scored 12 points.
Salisbury will continue its CAC schedule on Wednesday, January
19, at 6 p.m. when the Sea Gulls travel to Fredericksburg, Va., to
face No. 19 Unviersity of Mary Washington.
