ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's basketball claimed its first win of the season Wednesday
night with a 67-60 road victory over Capital Athletic Conference
foe St. Mary's (Md.) College. SU had four players reach career-high
totals, in various offensive categories, as all seven Sea Gulls
scored four or more points in the victory.
Salisbury (1-11, 1-2 CAC) was led by freshman guard
Katharine Curran who was unflappable from
three-point range (5-for-9) en route to a career-high 20 points to
go with two steals. Fellow freshman Meghan
Dunn registered a career-high 14 points and added four
rebounds as the Sea Gulls snapped an 11-game losing streak to begin
the season. Junior forward Kylie Hall registered
her second straight double-double, third this season, as she scored
11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Janay Johnson
was also strong upfront for the maroon and gold as she ripped down
13 rebounds, which ties her career best, to go with seven points
and two blocks. Sophomore guard Chante McKinney
reached career-high marks in rebounds (10) and assists (nine) as
she just missed a double-double. Freshman Glen
Charlton (seven points, five rebounds) and sophomore
Kelsey Netter (four points, five rebounds)
combined to total 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Gulls.
The Sea Gulls went on an 18-4 run late in the first half behind
a combination of strong shooting from the floor and great defense
to give SU a 14-point lead with 2:37 left before the break. St.
Mary's (2-8, 1-2 CAC) answered and cut the Sea Gull lead to five,
31-26, as the two teams went into halftime.
SU determined to leave with the win went on a 12-6 run in the
final four minutes to secure the victory over Seahawks. The Sea
Gulls outrebounded the Seahawks 54-36 as the Gulls shot 39.4
percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three-point range.
Salisbury's bench outscored St. Mary's lone substitute 18-0. The
Seahawks were paced by Jamie Roberts who scored a game-high 19
points while teammate Tiara Hurte got a double-double with 14
points and 11 rebounds.
The Sea Gulls look to continue their winning ways when they
travel to York, Pa., on Saturday, January 10, to face the Spartans
for a 4 p.m. conference game. This will be the second time
Salisbury and York have faced each other this season.
