No. 16 Sea Gulls fall to York 2-1 in double overtime

Box Score

YORK, Pa. - The No. 16 Salisbury University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 double overtime defeat to York (Pa.) College on Sunday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference match, in front of a crowd of 427. This marks the second straight regular season match that the two teams needed extra time to determine the victor, with the Sea Gulls (6-3-2, 3-1 CAC) winning 1-0 in 2008 in Salisbury, Md.

The Spartans (10-2-1, 3-0-1 CAC) got the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute when Stephanie Rice headed the ball past SU freshman goalkeeper Melissa Orgera (Arnold, Md.).

SU got on the board first, when in the first half, senior defender Hillary Grove (Hagerstown, Md.) stepped up to take a free kick from 25 yards out in the 37th minute. Grove struck the ball over the wall and just over the head of York goalkeeper Sarah Spanarkel for the 1-0 lead. It was the third consecutive game that Grove has scored off of a free kick for the Sea Gulls. SU controlled play throughout the first half as the Gulls fired off 10 shots compared to just two by the Spartans. The maroon and gold also earned two corner kicks.

The Spartans would even things up shortly into the second half of the match. In the 56th minute York sent in a corner kick, which deflected off a Sea Gull defender, and Carly Bock headed it past Orgera to knot things up at 1-1.

The two teams headed to overtime, where both defenses toughened up and forced most of the play through the midfield. In the first overtime session, sophomore midfielder Mara Hauf (Baltimore, Md.) lined up to take a free kick from 30 yards out and put a shot on frame, but Spanarkel made the save to keep things even. That would be the only shot of the first overtime period.

The Sea Gulls had only one shot in the second overtime period, when sophomore forward Sam Ondrejcak (Waldorf, Md.) fired off a shot in the 101st minute that went just wide of the goal. York followed that up with two shots on goal, before the late-game heroics of Rice for the victory.

For the match, the Sea Gulls outshot the Spartans 16-11. York earned five corner kicks, compared to just two for the Sea Gulls. Orgera finished with four saves for the Sea Gulls. Spanarkel picked up the victory for York, as she collected four saves.

Salisbury will look to get back to its winning ways this Tuesday when it travels to Arlington, Va., for a match against Marymount (Va.) University at 5 p.m.
