Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 2 Salisbury University
field hockey team celebrated senior night at Sea Gull Stadium with
a 5-0 victory over Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson
University on Tuesday night. On the season, Salisbury has outscored
its opponents 64-7.
The Sea Gulls (12-1, 5-0 CAC) had numerous chances in the first
half, dominating play with a 13-0 advantage in shots and a 9-0 edge
in penalty corners, but needed 30 minutes to break through. In the
31st minute Salisbury got on the board when sophomore
forward Caitlin Walker (Fallston,
Md.) settled a centering pass from senior midfielder
Michelle
Rowe (Elkton, Md.) and fired a shot past Stevenson
keeper Kara Zimmerman.
Zimmerman was tested all night long as she was forced to make 20
saves to keep the Mustangs (4-11, 1-4 CAC) in the match.
Nearly 10 minutes into the second half, the Sea Gulls struck
again. Senior forward Lauren Correll
(Bridgeville, Del.) sent a pass in front of the net
that junior forward Katy Lamboni (Salisbury,
Md.) slammed into the back of the cage, good for her
first goal of the year and a 2-0 lead.
The Sea Gulls scored three times in the final 21 minutes of the
match, getting unassisted tallies from freshman back Emily Ellenberger
(Gaithersburg, Md.) and senior forward Beverly Beladino
(Putnam Valley, N.Y.). The final score came off the
stick of junior back Ashley Kisner (Duncannon,
Pa.) from an Ellenberger assist.
Play remained in Salisbury's offensive end throughout the match,
as the Sea Gulls finished with a 32-1 edge on shots and had 26
penalty corners while the Mustangs had just one chance, coming in
the final 90 seconds of play.
Tonight's victory, the eighth shut-out of the season for the
Gulls, gives Salisbury a first-round bye in the CAC tournament. The
Sea Gulls will put their unblemished CAC mark on the line at the
University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in their final
conference match of the season. The match is slated to begin at 1
p.m.
