Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
women's soccer team closed out the 2009 regular season with its
fourth straight win Saturday afternoon, taking down St. Mary's
(Md.) College, 5-1. The win clinched the regular-season Capital
Athletic Conference title and the top seed, which brings with it a
first-round bye, for the CAC tournament scheduled for the first
week of November.
The Sea Gulls (10-3-2, 7-1 CAC) got on the board just under 12
minutes into the contest, thanks to a Sarah Jessilonis
(Pasadena, Md.) unassisted goal. She ripped a shot
from the right side of the box, beating the St. Mary's keeper to
the upper left corner of the goal.
The Sea Gulls took the 1-0 lead into halftime and then created a
commanding lead on the Seahawks (6-9-1, 4-3-1 CAC) with a pair of
goals in the first 18 minutes of the second half, for a 3-0 edge.
Senior forward Christina Eury
(Germantown, Md.) put home an unassisted tally in the
60th minute, going one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and
the lead grew when sophomore defender Kira Mangone (West
Windsor, N.J.) finished off a corner from senior
midfielder Stephanie Fersch
(Bloomindale, N.J.) just three minutes later.
St. Mary's got on the board off a penalty kick in the
65th minute. But Salisbury was not done, adding another
score from Jessilonis (off a Eury assist) before Eury went for her
second score of the day, from a sophomore midfielder Danielle Crowley
(Flanders, N.J.) helper.
The five points by Eury are a career high, besting her four
points scored Thursday when the Gulls beat Gallaudet University.
Jessilonis' four points match her career-best effort, set Oct. 14,
2008, against Marymount University.
Salisbury will have a week to get ready for CAC tournament play.
Following their first-round bye, the Sea Gulls will host a
semifinal contest on Nov. 4. Salisbury will welcome the winner of
the No. 5 seed at No. 4 seed contest, featuring Mary Washington at
St. Mary's College (Md.).
