Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury
University women's basketball team opened up its season with two
wins on the road, first defeating Peace College and then taking
down Salem College in the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament. On
Wednesday night the Sea Gulls looked to maintain their perfect
record as they faced off against Capital Athletic Conference foe
Hood College in their first home game of the season.
The first minutes of the game remained close as both Hood (1-3,
0-1 CAC) and Salisbury (3-0, 1-0 CAC) exchanged baskets, staying
within one point of each other. Salisbury pulled away shortly
thereafter, hitting a series of three-pointers; however, the lead
would be short-lived as the Blazers battled back, tying up the game
at 24 apiece with just two minutes remaining in the first half. The
Sea Gulls quickly made their way down the court and outscored the
Blazers 7-2 in those final two minutes, going into the locker room
with a 31-26 lead. Sophomore guard Glen
Charlton (Landover, Md.) led the charge in the first
half for the maroon and gold, going 2-for-2 in three-pointers and
scoring 14 points.
Hood bounced back quickly in the second half, taking the lead
for the first time in the game just three minutes in; the lead
lasted only a few seconds, though, as the Sea Gulls drove to the
basket, scoring nine unanswered points to recapture the lead. The
remainder of the game was similar to the first half as both teams
fought aggressively for possession and exchanged baskets;
ultimately the Sea Gulls prevailed, coming away with a 68-65
victory.
Salisbury was led by Charlton, who scored a career-high 23
points in the win. Senior forward Kylie Hall
(Baltimore, Md.) posted a double-double, netting
17 points and 15 rebounds. Senior forward Janay
Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) was also a key player in the
Sea Gull victory, pitching in with nine points on the night. Junior
guard Chante' McKinney (Gaithersburg, Md.)
also came up big, dishing out nine assists and scoring eight
points. This is the first time that Salisbury has opened up its
season 3-0 since 2005.
The Sea Gulls now look ahead to the Optimist Classic, which they
will be hosting this weekend. Their first game will be on Friday,
Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. against Hamilton College; on Saturday, Dec. 5,
Salisbury will face off against the College of New Jersey. Tip-off
