MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University women's
basketball team hit the road on Wednesday night to play in its
second Capital Athletic Conference match of the season, against St.
Mary's (Md.) College, coming away with a 64-59 victory. The win
improves the Sea Gulls' CAC record to a perfect 2-0, as they
defeated Hood College 68-65 back on Dec. 2.
Salisbury (5-1, 2-0 CAC) fell behind early in the game as St.
Mary's (2-6, 1-2 CAC) went on a 6-0 scoring run in the first two
minutes of play. Undeterred, the Sea Gulls chipped away at the
Seahawks' lead, eventually taking over with just under nine minutes
to play in the half. Salisbury dominated the half from that point
on, entering the locker room at halftime with a 37-30 advantage
over St. Mary's. Senior forwards Kylie Hall (Baltimore, Md.) and Janay Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) led
the maroon and gold in the first half, netting 10 and 13 points,
respectively.
Salisbury trailed only once in the second half as St. Mary's player
Steph Saint-Aubin hit a three-pointer with two minutes remaining in
the game to give the Seahawks a 59-58 advantage. Sophomore guard K.C. Curran (Malvern, Pa.) answered
back with a clutch three-pointer of her own, putting the Sea Gulls
up 61-59 with just 57 seconds left in the contest. Hall posted her
fifth double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 23 points
and pulling down 15 rebounds. Johnson finished the night with 16
points, and Curran netted nine points in the Sea Gull victory.
The Sea Gulls have gotten off to a fantastic start this season;
their only loss, against Hamilton College on Dec. 4, was by just
two points. Salisbury looks to continue its success on the road as
the team faces off against Goucher College on Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
SU's next home game will be on Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. against CAC
opponent Marymount (Va.) University.
